Supply, installation, training of single beam echo sounder and Side scan sonar system

Client: Sri Lanka Navy
Project description

Inova Engineering Pvt. Ltd successfully supplied, installed, and trained the SL Navy hydrography team of the National Hydrographic Office. This was the Sri Lanka’s first Side-scan imaging sonar. This was used to efficiently collect images of large areas of the sea bed around Sri Lanka’s Ocean zone.

SL Navy used this to conduct hydrographic surveys for marine archaeology; in conjunction with seafloor samples and to provide an understanding of the differences in material and texture in the type of the seabed. It was also used as an instrument to detect debris items and other obstructions on the seafloor that may be hazardous to shipping or seafloor installations and to maintain the status of pipelines and cables on the seafloor that can be investigated using the side-scan sonar. This Side-scan Imager was used along with a single beam echo sounder with bathymetric soundings data, thus providing a glimpse of the shallow structure of the seabed. Search and recovery is another current operation that are performing using this instrument by the SL Navy.

The single beam echo sounder which was also supplied by Inova was used to create National Nautical charts of the EEZ zone’s related to Sri Lankan Ocean area.
